Evil Eye – The WIKI

Evil Eye

Evil eye as the concept has many descriptions and the fact that it is not a tangible force makes it a controversial topic to many. As evileye.org looks at the information available through many sources out there, it only seems natural to start with wikipedia’s take on the subject. Here is what wikipedia says about the evil eye.

Evil eye is a look that is superstitiously believed by many cultures to be able to cause injury or bad luck on the person at whom it is directed for reasons of envy or dislike. The term also refers to the power attributed to certain persons, of inflicting injury or bad luck by such an envious or ill wishing look.

The idea that the term denotes causes many cultures to pursue protective measures against it. The concept and its significance vary widely among different cultures. The idea appears several times in translations (Tirgumim) of the Old Testament.  It was a widely extended belief between many Mediterranean tribes and cultures: Classical Greece probably learned this belief from Ancient Egypt, and later passed it to Ancient Rome.

I know many of us do not put a lot of stock in wikipedia’s information but this one seems to be right on. Perhaps it is not a complete description but it sure covers the basics of it as much as one paragraph can. A simple essay or even a collection of essays is not enough to cover all the angles. Evileye.org was created with this in mind and to give a voice to those who have a strong belief in the evil eye.
